Prostate Health After 40: Warning Signs, Screening and Natural Support
The prostate is a small gland below the bladder that every man has. As men get older, it often grows larger, and that can change the way you urinate. Prostate cancer is also one of the most common cancers in South African men, and Black men are at higher risk. That’s why it pays to know the signs and get checked.

Warning signs of prostate problems
- A weak or slow urine stream
- Waking up at night to urinate
- Needing to go urgently or often
- Difficulty starting to urinate, or dribbling at the end
- Feeling that your bladder isn’t empty
- Blood in your urine or semen (see a doctor promptly)
Most of these symptoms are caused by an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), which is not cancer. But only a doctor can tell the difference.
When should you get screened?
Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. CANSA recommends that men discuss screening from age 40 if they are Black or have a family history of prostate cancer, and from 45 otherwise. Screening usually starts with a simple PSA blood test.

A herbal tonic is not a replacement for screening or for treatment your doctor prescribes.
