Biotin and Saw Palmetto for Thinning Hair: What Works and What to Expect
Thinning hair, a receding hairline and extra shedding are common worries for both men and women. Supplements with biotin and saw palmetto are popular, but do they work? Here’s an honest look, plus the causes worth ruling out first.

Common causes of thinning hair
- Traction alopecia: tight braids, weaves, wigs and ponytails pull on the hairline. This is very common in Black women.
- Stress, illness or giving birth can trigger heavy shedding a few months later (telogen effluvium). It usually recovers.
- Low iron, thyroid problems and poor nutrition
- Genetics and hormones (male or female pattern hair loss)
If you are losing hair suddenly, in patches or with an itchy, scaly scalp, see a doctor. Blood tests can check iron, thyroid and vitamin levels.

Does biotin help hair growth?
Biotin (vitamin B7) helps your body make keratin, the protein hair is made of. If you are low in biotin, supplementing can improve hair. Real biotin deficiency is uncommon, so results vary from person to person. Important: biotin can affect some blood test results, including thyroid and heart tests. Tell your doctor you take it, and stop a few days before blood tests if they advise you to.

What about saw palmetto?
Saw palmetto is a plant extract that may reduce the effect of DHT, a hormone linked to pattern hair loss. Early studies are promising but small. It is used by both men and women.
Other supportive ingredients
- Nettle and fenugreek, traditionally used for hair and scalp health
- Gotu kola, used in traditional medicine for skin and circulation
- Folic acid, which supports normal cell division
A complete routine for thinning hair
- Take the pressure off. Choose looser styles and give your edges breaks between installs.
- Feed the scalp. Massage a growth serum like our Black Castor Oil + Baicapil Serum into thinning areas a few times a week.
- Support from within. Herbay Hair Rite combines biotin, saw palmetto, nettle, fenugreek, gotu kola and folic acid. Take 2 capsules daily.
- Eat enough protein and iron.
- Be patient. Hair grows about 1cm a month, so give any routine at least 3 months.
