Black Soap Bar vs Black Soap Paste: Which Should You Use?
Both the bar and the paste are African black soap cleansers. The bar is traditional, simple and cheaper (R99 for 100g). The paste is smoother and easier to use on the face, and ours adds vitamin C, aloe vera, shea butter and vitamin E (R190 for 125ml). Choose the bar if you want traditional black soap for face and body on a budget. Choose the paste if you find the bar too rough or drying, or want a face cleanser that fits into a vitamin C routine.

Why choose the black soap bar?
- Traditional: the classic form most people know.
- Value: about four to six weeks of twice-daily face use for R99.
- Face and body: one bar can do both.
Watch out for: the bar softens in water and can feel scratchy if rubbed straight onto the face. Always lather it in your hands first.

Why choose the black soap paste?
- Gentler to apply: no rough edges, so it suits facial skin better.
- Easy to measure: a pea-sized amount is enough for the face.
- Added skincare ingredients: vitamin C supports a brighter-looking complexion; aloe and shea help skin feel comfortable after cleansing.
- Fits a routine: it is the cleanser in our Black Soap Paste Skincare Set, with vitamin C serum and moisturiser.
Watch out for: it costs more per gram, and you should not dip wet fingers into the jar. Use a clean spoon to keep it fresh.
Which is better for oily skin and pimples?
Both clean oily skin well. If your skin is oily but not sensitive, the bar is fine and cheaper. If your skin gets red or tight with the bar, try the paste. Neither is an acne treatment; for painful or persistent acne, see a pharmacist or doctor.
Which is better for dark marks and chubaba?
Cleanser alone will not fade dark marks. What matters most is daily sunscreen and a brightening serum. The paste is a convenient cleanser for that routine. See our chubaba guide for the full routine.
How to use each one
Bar
- Wet face and bar.
- Rub the bar between your hands to make lather.
- Massage the lather on your face for 30 seconds.
- Rinse, pat dry and moisturise.
Paste
- Wet your face.
- Take a pea-sized amount with a clean spoon.
- Lather between wet hands and massage on for 30 seconds.
- Rinse, pat dry and follow with serum and moisturiser.
With either, start once a day and patch test first if your skin is sensitive. Wear sunscreen in the day.
