How to Grow Back Thinning Edges: A Guide for African Hair
Thinning edges are one of the most common hair concerns for women with natural and relaxed African hair. The good news is that you can often grow back thinning edges with gentle care. The hair around your hairline is finer and more fragile than the rest of your hair. So it is the first to suffer when it is pulled, rubbed or dried out.

Black castor oil and Baicapil serum for edges, thinning patches and a dry, flaky scalp.
In many cases, edges can recover if you catch the problem early and change a few habits. Here is what causes thinning and a simple routine to help your hairline grow back stronger.
What causes thinning edges, and can they grow back?
- Tension: tight braids, ponytails, weaves and wig bands pull on the hairline. Over time this can damage the follicles. Doctors call this traction alopecia.
- Friction: cotton pillowcases, wig caps and rough edge brushing wear away fine hairs.
- Dryness and chemicals: relaxers, strong gels and heat leave edges brittle, so they snap off.
- Other factors: stress, hormonal changes after pregnancy and some medical conditions can also cause hair loss. If your hair loss is sudden or patchy, see a doctor or dermatologist.
Step 1: Give your edges a break
Choose looser styles for a while, avoid gluing or taping lace to the hairline and leave out the edge gel when you can. Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase or wear a satin bonnet to reduce friction.

Step 2: Keep the scalp clean and moisturised
A healthy scalp grows healthy hair. Wash with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo such as our Black Castor Oil + Baicapil Nourishing Shampoo, then follow with the Replenishing Conditioner to keep strands soft and easy to detangle.
Step 3: Grow back thinning edges with a daily serum massage
Black castor oil has been used for generations to nourish the scalp and thicken hair. Baicapil is a plant-based active ingredient that supports the hair growth cycle and helps reduce hair loss. Our Black Castor Oil + Baicapil Hair Growth Serum combines both. Massage a few drops into your edges with your fingertips for a minute or two each day. The massage also boosts blood flow to the scalp.
Step 4: Strengthen the hair you have
New growth is fragile, so protect it. Smooth a little Strengthen and Restore Custard over your hairline to keep it moisturised and reduce breakage, and handle your edges gently when styling.
Step 5: Be consistent while thinning edges grow back
Hair grows slowly, about one centimetre a month, so give your routine at least 8 to 12 weeks. Take a photo of your hairline in the same light every month to track progress.
