How to Fade Dark Marks on Melanin-Rich Skin: A Simple Routine That Works
If you have melanin-rich skin, you probably know the frustration: a pimple clears up in a few days, but the dark mark it leaves behind stays for weeks or even months. Wondering how to fade dark marks like these? First, it helps to know what they are. Doctors call them post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and they are one of the most common skin concerns for people with darker skin tones.

The good news is that you can fade dark marks with the right routine and a bit of patience. Here is what causes them and the simple steps that help.
Why dark marks happen and why they are slow to fade
When your skin is inflamed, for example by a breakout, a scratch or irritation, it produces extra melanin as a defence. Darker skin has more active melanin-producing cells, so it reacts more strongly and the marks last longer. Picking or squeezing spots makes the inflammation worse, which is why the marks often get darker. The American Academy of Dermatology shares more tips on fading dark spots.
Step 1: Cleanse gently, twice a day
Harsh scrubs and strong soaps irritate the skin and can create new marks. Use a gentle cleanser morning and night. Our Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid Foaming Cleansing Gel cleans without stripping, and the Vitamin C starts brightening from the first step. If you prefer a traditional option, African black soap is a time-tested cleanser for oily and acne-prone skin.

Step 2: Use a Vitamin C serum to fade dark marks
Vitamin C is one of the best-studied ingredients for brightening the skin and evening out tone. Apply two or three drops of the Vitamin C & Hyaluronic Acid Brightening Face Serum after cleansing and toning. It also contains Melavoid, which targets uneven pigmentation, and squalene to keep skin soft.
Step 3: Treat breakouts before they leave a mark
The best way to deal with dark marks is to stop new ones from forming. Keep breakouts under control with a clarifying toner and a light, non-greasy moisturiser such as our Vitamin C Anti-Breakouts Face Cream. Once or twice a week, a charcoal and bentonite clay mask helps clear congested pores.
Step 4: Wear sunscreen every single day
This is the step most people skip, and it is the most important. Sunlight darkens existing marks and undoes the work of your serum. Even if you rarely burn, wear sunscreen every morning, including on cloudy days. Our Vitamin C & E Sunscreen with Squalene is made for melanin-rich skin and doubles as a light moisturiser.
Step 5: Be patient while you fade dark marks
Skin renews itself roughly every four to six weeks, so give any routine at least six to eight weeks before judging it. Older and deeper marks take longer. Taking a photo in the same light every two weeks makes it easier to see your progress.
The easy option: a complete kit
If you would rather not put a routine together yourself, our Complete Vitamin C & Hyaluronic Acid Face Kit brings the cleanser, toner, serum and cream together at a better price than buying each one separately. Browse the full pigmentation range for more options.
