Power Product for the month: African Black Soap

Our power product for the month is African black soap, a gentle, all-natural cleanser. Traditionally, makers in Ghana produce it from the ashes of locally harvested plants and barks. These include plantain, cocoa pods, palm tree leaves and shea tree bark. They then mix the ash with water and oils like palm oil, coconut oil and palm kernel oil. Shea butter and cocoa pod powder go in too.

What does African black soap do to my skin?

Black soap cleanses gently, so many people with sensitive or dry skin enjoy using it. Some versions also contain plantain ash, a traditional black soap ingredient. You can also use the soap as a shampoo or mild makeup remover.

The plantain skins give the soap vitamin A & E, and iron. Because the soap is rich in shea butter, some people say it also offers a little UV protection. However, it is no replacement for a proper sunscreen. Are you sensitive to caffeine? Then patch test soap that contains cocoa pods first, since skin may absorb some caffeine.

Characteristics

Black soap is a little crumbly and softer than most soap, so be careful to store it properly. Surprisingly, it’s a shade of brown instead of black. It also has a high glycerine content and absorbs water easily. For this reason, keep it in a plastic bag or a dry area away from the tub and shower.
