A Simple Black Soap Routine for Oily and Breakout-Prone Skin
A simple black soap routine for oily, breakout-prone skin is: cleanse with black soap, apply a light vitamin C serum, use an oil-free moisturiser, and finish with sunscreen in the morning. Start with black soap once a day, not twice, so your skin does not get dry and produce even more oil. Give it four to six weeks before judging the results.

Why oily skin still needs moisturiser
When you strip oily skin with harsh soaps and skip moisturiser, it can feel tight, then look shiny again within hours. A gentle routine that cleans well and keeps skin hydrated usually leaves it less shiny and less irritated. Irritated skin on darker tones is also more likely to leave dark marks.
Morning routine
- Cleanse. Wet your face and wash with a pea-sized amount of Black Soap Paste or the lather from a black soap bar. If your skin feels tight, use the gentler Vitamin C Foaming Cleanser in the morning instead.
- Tone (optional). A few sprays of Vitamin C Toner.
- Serum. Two or three drops of Vitamin C Serum to help with the look of dark marks.
- Moisturise lightly. A thin layer of Vitamin C Face Cream.
- Sunscreen. Finish with SPF 30. Read why in our sunscreen guide.

Evening routine
- Cleanse with black soap to remove sunscreen, sweat and oil.
- Serum, then moisturiser.
Once a week
Use the Charcoal & Bentonite Clay Mask on oily areas for 10 minutes. Do not scrub hard, and skip it if your skin is irritated.

Common mistakes
- Washing with black soap three or more times a day
- Rubbing the bar straight onto your face
- Skipping moisturiser because your skin is oily
- Adding many new products at once
- Squeezing pimples
When to see a pharmacist or doctor
If you have painful, deep or frequent pimples, or breakouts that leave scars, see a pharmacist or doctor. Black soap is a cleanser, not an acne treatment, and the right medical treatment can prevent scarring.
